How to Manage Broken Braces
Have you been having trouble with your dental braces? Do you know that there is a way to handle and manage braces on a day-to-day basis? Most of the time orthodontic patients who wear braces face a lot of inconvenience. But do not despair, there are ways to manage any setbacks for people who wear braces. Accidents can occur with traditional braces as the wires and brackets in the braces can break for any number of reasons.
Bracescan break due to injury to the mouth and/or eating the wrong type of foods like hard or sticky substances. This can cause the wire to break or the tooth may become loose. Vigorous brushing of the teeth, flossing in a rough manner or using toothpicks can also cause breakage of the braces. It is important first of all to see if the wires attaching the braces have broken. If the wire is attached but if it is jutting out, it should be pressed gently back into place using a cotton swab. Orthodontic wax can also be used to keep the braces in place or in case the bracket has become loose check to see if it is possible to remove it till you arrange for an appointment with your orthodontist.
Fix an Appointment with the Orthodontist for any Mishap with Braces
Brackets are made of ceramic or metal which is attached to each tooth with composite resin. If the resin becomes weak it tends to break and results in the bracket falling off. Normally the dentist gives the patient a special wax which can be stuck over the metal bracket to avoid hurting of the tongue or the mouth and gums. If the band becomes loose, it is necessary to see the dentist immediately so it can be re-attached to the tooth by replacing or cementing. Cutting the wire is dangerous as the small pieces can be swallowed or inhaled. Remember to bring the band to the orthodontist and do not try to fix the problem on your own.
In case of broken braces or the band coming loose, you can consult with the dentist if there is any pain or discomfort. Your dentist will prescribe a pain killer and suggest rinsing the mouth with salt water. This will reduce pain and infection. In some cases, the orthodontist will place rubber bands known as separators or spacers between the molars for creating space. Though this is not a common occurrence, the spacers may fall out sometimes. You can fix an appointment with the dentist to have your band replaced.
While waiting for your dental appointment, you can practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth and flossing about 2-3 times a day. Try to brush after every meal to get rid of food particles which will prevent inflammation and decay. You can also ask your orthodontist if there any other tools to clean the braces and safeguard the teeth. If you are wearing braces, stay away from hard and sticky foods, cheese dishes and pasta. This way you can help to keep your teeth clean and prevent cavities and gum disease. Make sure that you are wearing a mouthguard during athletic activities for prevention against injury.
