Bad Breath

Everyone dreads bad breath. Don’t they? Bad breath is typically caused by the growth of bacteria and plaque developed due to the presence of food particles. While there could be a variety of causes for bad breath like alcohol, liver problems, indigestion, lack of saliva and smoking, the major ones are still related to what you eat and your dental hygiene.

One of the major causes of bad breath is not brushing and flossing regularly leading to the formation of plaque which in turn will produce an odour.

But an often underestimated and the leading cause of bad breath is what you eat.  Different foods produce different odours and certain foods especially accentuate the formation of bad breath.  Digestion of certain types of food release sulfur components into the blood which in turn reaches the lungs and affects your breath.

So, at the end of the day whilst bad breath seems to come from your mouth, the root cause for the vast majority of the cases is from what you eat. Bad breath is just a symptom of toxic food that your body is allergic to. The allergy could either be acid reflux/gastric problems/an infection/ which is usually in reaction to a food item that your body is allergic to.

In this article our Dentists have addressed the root cause of bad breath and look at a variety of homemade remedies that could combat the problem of bad breath .

1) Brushing and flossing regularly

Cleaning Teeth

While this seems like a no-brainer, unfortunately far too many people fail to realize that oral hygiene needs to be taken care on a fairly regular basis. Brushing bi-daily removes the chunks of food caught in the food and eliminates the odour formed by the food particles. Mouthwash would not suffice and cannot cure the issue. Mouthwash just masks the problem and does not resolve the root cause.

Also, many people don’t floss regularly making themselves vulnerable for bad breath. This is why it is vital that people have a regular brushing and flossing schedule. And the brushing sequence matters too. Just keep in mind that the bacteria is usually present either in the tongue, gums or the teeth, so make sure you cover these areas when you brush and floss.

2) Consuming fennel seeds

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds are omnipresent. The spice dominates the everyday cuisine in India and consumed in myriad forms. They have a lot of health benefits due to their antiseptic properties. Right from regulating blood pressure to helping with digestion and reducing asthma symptoms, fennel seeds help in a ton of health benefits in addition to curing bad breath.

Fennel seeds are either consumed in liquid form by dissolving it in hot water/tea or via food or sometimes even orally without any alteration. In addition to bad breath, they also cure sinus, a typical mouth infection.
